Shopping cart malware compromises credit card information

Share

Malware inserted by an unauthorized third party on a shopping cart system may have compromised personal data, including credit card information, for an undisclosed number of people who made purchases on websites belonging to the Outdoor Network, an online outdoor advertising agency.

How many victims? Unknown.

What type of personal information? Names, addresses, credit card numbers, card expiration dates and card security codes (CVV or CVC).

What happened?  An unauthorized third party inserted malware on the shopping cart portion of boats.net and partzilla.com – websites belonging to Outdoor Network – which may have compromised the personal data.

What was the response? Outdoor Network sent letters to affected customers to inform them of the issue and additionally notified the credit card companies to protect accounts. Outdoor Network suggests that customers remain secure by obtaining credit reports and placing fraud alerts on their credit files.

Details: The malware targeted credit card transactions between Dec. 2012 and July.

Quote: “We recently learned of an incident on our websites (boats.net and partzilla.com) that may have exposed your personal information to unauthorized persons,” said Outdoor Network CEO Martin Polo, in the letter to potentially affected customers. “This notification to you was not delayed as a result of a law enforcement investigation.”
