Karmanos Cancer Center patient info at risk from lost flash drive

Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center officials said an unencrypted flash drive containing information on patients and family members at its Detroit and Farmington Hill, Mich., locations was lost in the mail.

How many victims? 2,808 patients of the Detroit and Farmington centers and their family members.

What type of information? The flash drive contained patients' names, patient numbers assigned by the center and physician names.

What happened? An unencrypted flash drive that contained administrative information following an system upgrade was placed in an envelope mailed to the Karmanos Cancer Center but was missing from the envelope when it reached its destination.

What was the response?  Karmanos Cancer Center notified potential victims and is offering them a year of free identity protection and is still looking for the lost drive.  

Details? The flash drive did not contain sensitive information such as social security numbers or payment card information, dates of birth or addresses and phone numbers. The cancer center has a established a number (844)788-5948, open Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., for those affected to call after they receive their notification letters.
