New York-based Monroe University has confirmed that more than 320,000 people had their information compromised following a December 2024 cyberattack, Cybernews reports.

Threat actors who infiltrated the university's systems between Dec. 9, 2024 and Dec. 23, 2024 were able to pilfer individuals' names, birthdates, Social Security numbers, passport numbers, driver's license numbers, government ID numbers, medical details, health insurance information, student information, passwords, and financial account details, said Monroe University in a filing with the Office of the Maine Attorney General. While there has been no indication of data misuse, individuals affected by the intrusion were urged to be wary of potential fraud and identity theft attacks.

Such a disclosure comes amid increasingly prevalent cyberattacks against universities. Harvard University had 1.4 TB of data exposed by the Clop ransomware gang in October, while Columbia University had information from almost 900,000 people stolen in a June cyber intrusion.
