Baylor Genetics confirms cyberattack impacting 2.8 million patients and employees

Baylor Genetics, a US-based clinical diagnostic laboratory, confirmed a cyberattack that compromised the sensitive data of approximately 2.8 million patients and employees. The intrusion was detected in mid-June, leading to the theft of personal and medical information, with further coverage provided by Tech Radar.

The cyberattack, which occurred around June 15, resulted in the theft of patient data including names, dates of birth, medical testing information, laboratory test results, and potentially health insurance information and Social Security numbers (SSNs) for a limited subset of patients. For current and former employees, stolen data included SSNs, government-issued identification numbers, and financial account information. Baylor Genetics reported the incident to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, listing 2,810,878 affected individuals.

The company stated that its operations continued as usual and, as of the report, there was no evidence of confirmed identity theft, fraud, or misuse of the stolen information. No threat actors have claimed responsibility for the attack.
