Tens of millions of French citizen records exposed

Security breach, system hacked alert with red broken padlock icon showing unsecure data under cyberattack, vulnerable access, compromised password, virus infection, internet network with binary code

A massive database containing tens of millions of French citizen records, compiled from at least five separate data breaches, has been exposed online. The compromised data includes voter information, healthcare records, financial details, CRM contacts, and vehicle information. This incident poses significant risks of phishing, fraud, and identity theft for affected individuals, as described in a report by Tech Radar.

Security researchers at Cybernews discovered a large database on an open cloud server containing an amalgamation of data from at least five breaches. The archive held over 23 million voter records with names and addresses, approximately 9.2 million healthcare entries, over 6 million CRM contacts, around 6 million financial profiles including IBANs and BICs, and vehicle registration and insurance information.

Experts believe the database was likely compiled by a criminal data broker aiming to increase resale value and enable cross-linking of identities for malicious purposes. The exposure of such a comprehensive dataset highlights the severe privacy risks associated with aggregated data breaches.
