White House official highlights quantum supply chain challenges

As detailed in CyberScoop, a top White House official on Wednesday identified the complex and diffuse nature of the quantum supply chain as one of the most significant hurdles in the ongoing quantum race. Brad Blakestad, director of the National Quantum Coordination Office, emphasized that quantum technology is not monolithic, encompassing computing, sensing, and networking, each with distinct components and multiple modalities within computing alone.

Blakestad explained that this fragmentation results in numerous intertwined supply chains rather than a single, easily managed one. He noted that the nascent commercialization of quantum technology means current revenue streams are insufficient to bolster the supply chain adequately, presenting a funding challenge for government support. International reports corroborate this, highlighting that no single country dominates the global quantum supply chain, which relies on specialized materials, equipment, hardware, software, and algorithms from various nations, including potential adversaries.

Beyond the supply chain, Blakestad also pointed to the encryption challenge posed by advancing quantum capabilities and the difficulty in benchmarking progress as critical issues requiring swift attention and strategic investment in the U.S. quantum ecosystem.
