As outlined by TechCrunch, Petco has disclosed a data breach affecting its customers. The pet products and services giant revealed the incident in a filing with California's attorney general, confirming that personal information was leaked.

The breach occurred when a software application setting inadvertently allowed certain files to become accessible online. Petco discovered the issue internally and claims to have immediately corrected the setting and removed the files. While the exact type of personal data exposed has not been specified, the company is notifying affected individuals.

California law mandates disclosure for breaches impacting at least 500 state residents, suggesting a minimum number of affected customers. Petco has also notified individuals in Massachusetts and Montana. Petco is offering free credit and identity theft monitoring services to affected customers.
