South Carolina's Lexington-Richland School District Five had information from 31,475 individuals compromised following a June data breach claimed by the Interlock ransomware gang, Infosecurity Magazine reports.

Attackers who infiltrated the District's systems on June 3 were able to pilfer data, including current and former names, birthdates, Social Security numbers, state-issued ID details, and financial account information, said the District in a filing with the Office of the Maine Attorney General. All impacted individuals have been given complimentary credit monitoring services for a year, as well as $1 million identity theft insurance.

"We engaged independent cybersecurity experts to assist with investigating and remediating our network. As a result of the investigation, we determined that some files were taken from the network by an external unauthorized individual," said District Superintendent Akil E. Ross Sr. Education and local administration entities have been primarily targeted by Interlock since its emergence late last year.

Meanwhile, over two dozen U.S. education organizations were confirmed to have been subjected to ransomware so far this year, according to Comparitech.
