U.S. healthcare technology firm Doctor Alliance which provides billing services to AccentCare, Intrepid, and other healthcare providers had more than 1.2 million records purportedly stolen from its systems by cybercriminals, who threatened to expose the entire data trove should the demanded ransom not be met, Cybernews reports. In a post on a widely known cybercrime forum, attackers included a 200 MB data sample, which included medical records with names, home addresses, phone numbers, diagnoses, prescriptions, check-up summaries, treatment plans, hospital orders, health insurance claim numbers, and physician names.Such alleged data exposure presents a significant threat to both patients and doctors, exacerbated by the presence of non-recoverable information."This data leak poses a huge risk of identity theft and medical fraud for the patients involved, such as obtaining medical services or prescription drugs in the victim's name. Both doctors and patients can fall victim to social engineering attacks," said Cybernews researchers.
