More than 1,200 domains impersonating luxury brands, including Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Dior, Versace, and Dolce & Gabbana, have been registered between August and September, as threat actors look to exploit the holiday shopping season, Cybernews reports.Attackers have registered 800 suspicious domains in late September, which was 67% of all identified domains, according to an analysis from BforeAI's PreCrime Labs. Domain registrations surged on Sept. 11 amid preparations for Diwali, Hanukkah, and Christmas, said researchers, who observed the increase in fake domains as the U.S. imposed trade tariffs.Additional findings revealed that most of the fraudulent domains were either inactive or parked, suggesting potential use for Black Friday and other major promotional events. Reputational and financial risks stemming from such domain spoofing should prompt retailers to be more proactive in high-risk brand registrations and brand abuse tracking. Retailers should also bolster customer-targeted purchasing education efforts.
