As reported by TechCrunch, the Los Angeles Police Department is investigating a significant data breach where sensitive internal documents were allegedly stolen and leaked online. The incident has raised concerns about the security of law enforcement data and the methods employed by cybercriminal groups.

The breach, attributed to the extortion gang World Leaks, reportedly exposed approximately 7.7 terabytes of data, including over 337,000 files. These documents allegedly contain sensitive police officer personnel files, internal affairs investigations, and discovery documents with unredacted criminal complaints and personal information of witnesses. While the LAPD stated the breach did not affect its own systems, it impacted a digital storage system belonging to the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office.

World Leaks, which began its activities in January 2025 as a rebrand of Hunters International, has a history of targeting various industries, including healthcare, manufacturing, and technology.
