Experts warn of risks in cloud marketplace buying

Experts warn that while cloud marketplaces simplify software purchasing, organizations risk hidden costs, governance gaps, and vendor lock-in if they do not apply the same scrutiny used for traditional enterprise software procurement, according to Forbes.

Members of the Forbes Technology Council say the ease of one-click buying often leads companies to confuse fast procurement with operational readiness, overlooking integration, security, and lifecycle management requirements that emerge after deployment. Many organizations also fail to define business needs before purchasing off-the-shelf applications, resulting in tools that do not match specific operational requirements. Licensing mismatches and organic adoption across teams can drive unexpected spending, while subscription renewals, variable usage fees, and autoscaling infrastructure costs may significantly increase total ownership costs.

Security and compliance risks are another concern, as some firms assume marketplace software automatically meets internal standards. Experts also warn about tool sprawl, limited visibility into vendor terms, and potential lock-in if exit clauses and portability plans are not defined early. As several contributors note, marketplace convenience can hide long-term risks unless leaders establish governance, cost controls, and architectural reviews before purchasing software.
