As outlined in Coin Central, the French cooperative bank Crédit Mutuel Arkéa recently confirmed it was the target of a sophisticated cyberattack that resulted in significant financial losses.

The bank stated that attackers gained access to its systems through a third-party service provider rather than its online banking arm, Fortuneo. During the incident, the perpetrators utilized the bank's own accounts to initiate unauthorized transfers to external banks, where the funds were likely converted into cryptocurrency. While independent investigator ZachXBT estimated the losses at more than $133 million, the bank declined to confirm the exact figure, noting only that the estimate aligns with the order of magnitude of the theft. Crédit Mutuel Arkéa emphasized that customer accounts were not compromised and that the breach has been contained. The institution has since implemented enhanced security measures and is collaborating with law enforcement to recover the stolen assets. Despite the severity of the breach, the bank maintains that its overall financial stability remains intact. It has also issued a warning to its 5.8 million members regarding a potential increase in phishing attempts following the event. The investigation into the origin of the attack and the identification of the perpetrators remains ongoing.
