Back to the beginning: Why AI’s impact on data security makes the endpoint the battlefield once again

AI is pulling sensitive work from the cloud and SaaS back onto the endpoint, reversing a decade-old security model built around transmission channels.

Employees download source code, financial models and production data to laptops for local AI processing. Coding assistants and AI agents operate through desktop applications and command-line interfaces. AI-generated content is increasingly created directly on devices.

For channel-monitoring security tools like DLP, DSPM and CASB, the endpoint is a blind spot they can't fully reach. Local agent activity generates no browser session or SaaS call to inspect. Desktop AI applications look like black boxes. Shadow egress compounds the problem as users feed corporate data into personal AI accounts that carry no enterprise agreement, no retention control, and no way to retrieve what has already been exfiltrated.

Reach is only half the problem. The data driving the most risk today has no fixed pattern to match. Source code, financial models, and proprietary documents look nothing alike from one company to the next, so pattern-based classification misses the material that costs the most to lose. A tool that reaches the endpoint but still classifies by regex sees the activity and not the data.

Channel-security tools still do what they were built for. Closing the gap means adding enforcement where data, human input, and agent activity converge: the endpoint. Controls running locally on the device can classify data by meaning and evaluate application, user and agent behavior in real time before sensitive information is lost.
