BitMart is grappling with a severely understaffed security team following a recent cyberattack that resulted in the loss of digital assets, according to a recent report by Coin Central.
Blockchain analytics firm Bitquery identified approximately $391,000 in suspicious transfers across three blockchains linked to the exchange. Investigations revealed these funds were routed to a wallet previously associated with a $46 million breach at the Brazilian exchange Mercado Bitcoin. BitMart founder Sheldon Xia confirmed the incident, citing significant difficulties in retaining technical staff due to external threats and internal restructuring efforts. The exchange, which is scheduled to cease operations in January 2027, has proposed a recovery plan for users involving liquid asset distributions and recovery tokens, pending court approval. This security failure coincides with the dissolution of the T3 Financial Crime Unit, a collaborative effort between Tron, Tether and TRM Labs that struggled with operational coordination. The industry remains on high alert as these incidents highlight ongoing vulnerabilities in digital asset platforms, particularly as exchanges navigate complex restructuring processes and persistent threats from malicious actors targeting core infrastructure.
