A data breach last December that affected approximately 1,100 students and led to the resignation of a high school assistant principal exposed the information of nearly 200 alumni and at least two deceased students, Missoula County Public Schools has informed parents, according to a report in the Missoulian.
On Dec. 4, Hellgate High School Assistant Principal Libby Oliver, who subsequently resigned, inadvertently sent an email containing personal information to 28 unauthorized recipients. The email included grades as well as academic, medical, psychiatric, criminal and disciplinary information.
As staff prepared to send out breach notification letters, they discovered victims who weren't registered as current students.
The breach included data from the 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15 school years, the Missoulian quoted MCPS Superintendent Mark Thane as saying.
The school district disclosed the breach to the Family Policy Compliance Office at the U.S. Department of Education.
