In a move to accelerate innovation in cybersecurity research and development, the White House has recruited Greg Shannon, a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the chief scientist for the CERT division at Carnegie Mellon University's Software Engineering Institute.
Shannon will join the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) as assistant director for cybersecurity strategy in the National Security and International Affairs Division.
Shannon has been at the CERT division at CMU since 2010 where he led cybersecurity projects with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Agency and the Department of Homeland Security. Prior, he was chief scientist at two startups working on statistical anomaly detection in sensor streams, cybersecurity and insider threats. He has presented testimony to Congress on cybersecurity and on threats to the homeland on several occasions.
At OSTP, Shannon will be charged with improving cybersecurity technologies and practices as well as advancing the interdependence of security and privacy, and fostering thought leadership in the cybersecurity workforce.
The OSTP develops and implements science and technology policies and budgets across federal agencies and works with the private sector, state and local governments, and science and higher education communities.
