The Topps Company is alerting customers of its online portal that the site was hacked, according to Sports Collectors Daily.
The company, most known for its sports cards and other trading cards (i.e., Garbage Pail Kids, Star Wars and Frozen), also issues comic books, chewing gum and candy.
Email alerts went out last Wednesday to potential victims after the company found out on October 12 that “one or more intruders gained unauthorized access to its website.”
Clients who purchased items as early as July 30 may have had their personal and financial data – including names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, credit or debit card numbers, card expiration dates and verification numbers – compromised.
The New York-based company said it is working with an online security company, its web developer and hosting company to resolve the intrusion.
Some customers ordering cards through the Topps NOW platform have already complained that their credit cards were charged with illicit purchases.
Topps made a year's worth of identity theft protection available to those possibly affected by the incursion, and is advising its customers to monitor their credit card statements for fraudulent charges.
The number of those customers affected has not been released.
