Backup hard drive stolen from law firm contained personal info

Law firm Imhoff and Associates, PC is notifying an undisclosed number of individuals that their personal information – including Social Security numbers – was on a backup hard drive that was stolen from the locked trunk of an employee's vehicle.

How many victims? Undisclosed – a SCMagazine.com request for this information was not returned.

What type of personal information? Names, addresses, phone numbers, birth dates, email addresses, driver's license numbers and Social Security numbers.

What happened? A backup hard drive was stolen from the locked trunk of an employee's vehicle.

What was the response? Law enforcement was notified. Imhoff and Associates, PC is strengthening internal processes regarding encryption, and enhancing policies, procedures and staff education on the safeguarding of company property and information. All impacted individuals are being notified and offered a free year of identity theft protection services.

Details: The backup hard drive was stolen on the morning of June 27 and has yet to be recovered.

Quote: “Imhoff has no reason to believe that the hard drive was stolen for the information it contained or that your information has been accessed or used in any way,” Vincent Imhoff, managing director of Imhoff and Associates, PC, wrote in the notification letter.
