Upswell in AI-powered voice fraud recorded

Infosecurity Magazine reports that AI-enabled voice and virtual meeting fraud incidents that typically involved interactive voice response systems for reconnaissance surged by 1,210% between January and December last year, compared with a 195% increase in traditional fraud over the same period.

Healthcare and retail organizations were most heavily impacted by such AI-powered fraud, with intelligence from IVR systems leveraged by bots for account hijacking intrusions, findings from a Pindrop report showed. Moreover, AI-assisted return fraud has become prevalent in the retail sector.

"Fraudsters deploy bots equipped with common scripts that initiate return requests across retail sites and mobile apps. The strategy is intentional: target low-dollar refunds that stay below review thresholds. Each refund is small. Thousands of them are not. What looks like background noise quickly becomes a material loss when bots run continuously," said the report, which attributed increased illicit AI usage to greater affordability, stealth, and scalability.
