UPMC Health Plan compromises personal data of 722 patients

University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Health Plan said Tuesday that the information of 722 insurance subscribers has been compromised in its third breach in two years.

On June 4 the insurance provider sent a file containing protected health information (PHI) and intended for a physician's office in Lawrence Country to the wrong email address.

The file contained patient names, member ID numbers, dates of birth, phone numbers, names of primary care physician offices, and insurance plan types but did not contain social security numbers or medical history information, according to a company alert.  

An employee data breach earlier this year impacted more than 2,000 patients and one last year affected 62,000 workers, according to The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. 

Those affected are being notified and the email's recipient was advised to delete the email and destroy the file.
