Uffizi Galleries cyberattack: Data stolen, backups restore archive

The Uffizi Galleries, a prominent Italian museum, confirmed a cyberattack in early 2026 that resulted in the theft of its photographic archive. While the attackers reportedly accessed sensitive information, the museum was able to restore all lost data using backups, as reported by Tech Radar.

Hackers targeted the Uffizi Galleries in February 2026, allegedly stealing the museum's entire photographic archive. Reports from Cybernews, citing local media, claimed the attackers also obtained codes, passwords, internal maps, and details about surveillance systems. However, the Uffizi has denied these specific claims, stating there is no evidence of stolen maps and that camera locations are publicly visible.

The museum is currently replacing hardware, a process recommended in 2024 due to outdated analog cameras. Some artifacts were also moved to a secure vault, an action the museum states was pre-planned.
