Threat hunting gaps leave firms exposed

Despite the average data breach now costing $4.88 million, many organizations still fail to integrate threat intelligence effectively into their cybersecurity strategies, according to Forbes.

A key gap lies in underused external threat hunting, or "threat reconnaissance," which helps identify and prioritize risks before they impact operations. According to the Voice of a Threat Hunter Report 2024, only 42% of organizations have well-integrated threat hunting programs, increasing vulnerability to cyberattacks. Effective threat hunting requires real-time, tailored intelligence, unlike generic alerts that overwhelm analysts and miss relevant threats. Integration with tools such as EDR, SIEM, and SOAR systems, combined with automation, can improve responsiveness and accuracy. Training is also vital, with ISACA noting that 59% of cybersecurity teams are understaffed. Upskilling in threat hunting not only strengthens teams but helps close talent gaps. Real-time intelligence sharing, particularly with sector-specific ISACs, further enhances early detection. Ultimately, proactive threat hunting, empowered by the right intelligence, tools, and skills, can significantly reduce breach risks.
