Ukraine shuts down 94 fraudulent call centers in nationwide crackdown

Authorities in Ukraine have shut down 94 fraudulent call centers across the country in a large-scale operation targeting scams that lured victims into investment schemes or attempted to gain access to bank accounts. The operation involved extensive searches and collaboration between Ukrainian and German law enforcement agencies, with further coverage provided by Bleeping Computer.

The crackdown, which involved 411 searches, targeted call centers where operators impersonated bank officials, brokers, and law enforcement. These scammers employed various tactics, including threatening to block accounts unless payments were made, persuading victims to apply for loans, and tricking them into installing remote access tools. Some operations specifically targeted citizens in the European Union, promoting fake investment platforms and medical treatments with no medicinal properties.

During the raids, authorities seized a significant amount of equipment, including 1,794 workstations, 3,336 computer units, 1,346 phones, 5,200 SIM cards, 90 bank cards, access to 20 cryptocurrency wallets, 22 vehicles, and substantial amounts of cash and gold. Twenty-six individuals have been identified as suspects and could face up to 12 years in prison and property confiscation if convicted under Ukrainian law. Forensic investigations are ongoing to identify victims and the full extent of the financial losses.
