SK Telecom refutes legitimacy of leaked client data

Leading South Korean telecommunications provider SK Telecom has repudiated the legitimacy of 100 GB of data purportedly stolen from its systems by the Scattered Lapsus$ Hunters threat group, Yonhap News Agency reports.

Scattered Lapsus$ Hunters claimed that infiltrating SK Telecom's systems has enabled the theft of data belonging to 27 million users, including their names, birthdates, phone numbers, email and home addresses, and IDs, which would be exposed should the firm refuse to enter negotiations.

Aside from being reported by the Korea Internet & Security Agency to have been peddling SK Telecom's internal software for $250,000, Scattered Lapsus$ has also asserted having programs enabling real-time text message and phone call compromise. All such claims have been denied by SK Telecom.

"After analyzing sample data, website screenshots, and file transfer protocol screens posted on the dark web, we concluded that all of the information is fake, and the website does not exist within our company's system," said an SK Telecom official.
