Signal founder launches Confer, an encrypted AI chat alternative

Moxie Marlinspike, the creator of the secure messaging app Signal, has introduced Confer, a new AI chatbot designed with privacy as its core principle. The initiative aims to provide a secure alternative to popular services like ChatGPT, addressing growing concerns about data privacy in AI interactions, according to a recent report by ZD NET.

Confer offers end-to-end encryption for AI conversations, ensuring that user interactions remain private and cannot be accessed, stored, or used for training by third parties, including Confer itself. The service utilizes passkey encryption, server encryption, and WebAuthn PRF extensions, operating within an isolated Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) with remote attestation to verify code integrity.

This approach contrasts with traditional AI services where prompts are often stored in plaintext, making them vulnerable to breaches and data mining. Confer sources various open-source AI models for different tasks, with potential for more advanced options in premium tiers.
