U.S. private and public organizations were noted by FBI Deputy Assistant Director for Cyber Intelligence Michael Machtinger to be continuously threatened by the Chinese state-backed cyberespionage operation Salt Typhoon nearly two years after it had compromised the country's telecommunications infrastructure, CyberScoop reports.Despite successful mitigation of Salt Typhoon intrusions through the efforts of both the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, the Chinese hacking group has persistently targeted vulnerable legacy systems to infiltrate targeted networks, said Machtinger at this year's CyberTalks."None of these concepts are newand truthfully, they're not all that advanced, but they are increasingly essential as adversaries adapt their tactics and our attack surface becomes more widespread. If we're going to safeguard our personal and proprietary information, it is just as important for us to lock the doors inside the house as it is to lock the front door," noted Machtinger, who emphasized the importance of recognizing the ongoing threat of Salt Typhoon.
