Rethink cloud security assumptions, WatchGuard urges

As World Cloud Security Day sharpens focus on emerging threats, Cloudflare and WatchGuard urged organizations to rethink assumptions about inherent cloud safety, according to Security Brief New Zealand

WatchGuard's Anthony Daniel said many Australian organizations overestimate cloud platform security, warning that direct attacks on cloud platforms have shifted to the identity and access layer. WatchGuard telemetry showed more than 96,000 network attacks blocked against Australian targets in one quarter, over 10 times malware detections, reflecting persistent reconnaissance and exploitation of cloud-linked infrastructure. Daniel said organizations need integrated visibility across identity, endpoint, and network activity with zero trust ensuring every request is assessed in real time.

Cloudflare's Volker Rath said conventional cloud security advice is stuck in a scenario that no longer exists, with AI, citizen development, software supply chain complexity, and quantum computing reshaping risk scale and speed. He called for automated, adaptive security integrated into how organizations build and operate, using AI as a central defense tool for vulnerability identification and anomaly detection. Rath said many best practices still serve well, but organizations must continue security transformation focusing on sensitive data and identities.
