Regulators crack down on fraudulent cloud mining schemes

Cloud Tech News reports that a surge in fraudulent cloud mining schemes that promise impossible, guaranteed returns is prompting global regulators to aggressively distinguish between legitimate computing services and financial traps disguised as cryptocurrency infrastructure.

While leasing hashing power from a real data center is a valid technical model akin to standard cloud computing, a shadow industry has emerged selling unregistered securities that ignore fundamental market volatility and the inherent risks of cryptocurrency mining. These Ponzi-like operations, which often use multi-level marketing and cloned websites, promise fixed daily payouts that are economically impossible given the fluctuating value of hardware and Bitcoin's network difficulty.

In response, enforcement is intensifying, with the SEC securing a $46 million judgment against one operator and law enforcement collaborating with exchanges like Binance to freeze millions in fraudulent assets. Concurrently, regulations like the European Union's Digital Operational Resilience Act (DORA) are forcing greater transparency by requiring financial entities to map critical third-party dependencies, a standard that legitimate infrastructure providers can meet but fraudulent operators cannot.
