Major South Korean battery manufacturer LG Energy Solution had one of its overseas facilities disrupted by a ransomware intrusion, according to The Record, a news site by cybersecurity firm Recorded Future.Operations of the affected facility have since normalized, said an LG Energy Solution spokesperson, who noted that neither its headquarters nor its other facilities had been compromised as a result of the attack. Additional details regarding the incident have been scant. However, the Akira ransomware operation earlier this week claimed to have pilfered 1.7 TB of data, including corporate files and employee databases, from the firm's systems. Attacks launched by the Akira ransomware gang aimed at manufacturing and other sectors have already yielded earnings exceeding $244 million, according to an updated FBI notice issued last week."Akira ransomware doesn't just steal money it disrupts the systems that power our hospitals, schools, and businesses," said FBI Cyber Division Assistant Director Brett Leatherman.
