Canadian electrical services firm Spark Power, which also operates in the U.S., was claimed to have had 222 GB of data pilfered from its systems by the Qilin ransomware gang, reports Cybernews.

Qilin has not provided any samples of the exfiltrated data to substantiate the alleged breach. However, Spark Power, which also operates in the U.S., may have lost operational files with financial and employee personal information, as well as routine business documents, according to Cybernews researchers, who noted the possibility of substantial operational disruptions due to the intrusion.

"If its systems are locked, this can delay inspections, slow down repairs, or postpone other critical operations," researchers added. Qilin's assertions of having compromised Spark Power come after it alleged attacks against Texas-based electric utilities San Bernard Electric Cooperative and Karnes Electric Cooperative, which led to the theft of internal files, financial reports, and employee details. Nearly 1,000 organizations have already been targeted by Qilin since 2023.
