Proton launches privacy-focused video conferencing service

Coverage from Bleeping Computer indicates that Proton has launched a new video conferencing service named Meet, positioning it as a privacy-focused alternative to mainstream services like Google Meet, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams. The service offers end-to-end encrypted calls and can be used for free for one-hour meetings with up to 50 participants.

Proton Meet utilizes the Messaging Layer Security (MLS) protocol for end-to-end encryption, ensuring that all media and chat are encrypted client-side. This architecture, built on WebRTC with Selective Forwarding Units (SFU), prevents Proton from accessing cleartext data. Meeting links include an ID and password authenticated via the Secure Remote Password (SRP) protocol.

The service is integrated with Proton Calendar and supports adding meetings to Google and Microsoft calendars. Proton emphasizes that even in the event of a server compromise, traffic cannot be read or modified, and databases only contain meeting IDs, not sensitive information.
