Palo Alto Networks is in negotiations to acquire Clutch Security, a startup specializing in securing AI agent access to corporate systems, for $500 million in cash plus milestone-based payments, according to TechCrunch.

The three-year-old startup, which recently reached $10 million in annual recurring revenue, was previously valued at $85 million. If finalized, the deal would value the company at 50 times its revenue. This acquisition reflects a broader industry trend where cybersecurity firms prioritize securing infrastructure against AI-driven threats. This potential deal marks the seventh acquisition for Palo Alto Networks this year, following a strategy of purchasing innovation to counter sophisticated cyberattacks. Recent purchases include Console, Embrace, Chronosphere and Koi.

The market for AI security remains highly competitive, with rivals like Cyera acquiring Oasis Security for $1 billion and Cisco purchasing Astrix for approximately $400 million. Neither Palo Alto Networks nor Clutch Security provided comments regarding the ongoing discussions. As organizations increasingly rely on AI agents to manage internal processes, the demand for specialized security tools that govern these agents' access to sensitive data has surged, driving high valuations for startups in the sector.
