Microsoft Teams enhances call security with Brand Impersonation Protection

As detailed in Bleeping Computer, Microsoft is introducing a new security feature called Brand Impersonation Protection to Microsoft Teams calls. This feature aims to combat social engineering attacks by warning users about external callers who attempt to impersonate trusted organizations.

The Brand Impersonation Protection feature will begin rolling out in mid-February and will be enabled by default for targeted release users. It analyzes incoming VoIP calls from new external contacts for signs of brand impersonation, displaying high-risk call warnings before a call is answered. These alerts can persist if suspicious signals continue, helping to prevent scammers from posing as legitimate businesses or government agencies to steal information or money. Microsoft advises IT departments to prepare support staff and update training materials to address potential user questions about these new warnings.

This proactive safeguard aligns with Microsoft's ongoing efforts to enhance caller identity protection and secure collaboration within its platforms. With over 320 million monthly Teams users, such features are crucial in mitigating the growing threat of social engineering attacks and protecting users from fraudulent activities.
