According to Bleeping Computer, a Ukrainian national has pleaded guilty to operating OnlyFake, a website that utilized artificial intelligence to generate and sell over 10,000 fake identification documents globally.

Yurii Nazarenko, 27, admitted to running the subscription-based platform, which created counterfeit passports, driver's licenses, and Social Security cards. The generated documents could be customized with personal details or randomized information and were offered as scans or photographs. Prosecutors stated the primary use of these fake IDs was to bypass Know Your Customer (KYC) verification requirements at financial institutions and cryptocurrency exchanges, thereby facilitating money laundering. Undercover FBI agents successfully purchased fake IDs from the site, which only accepted cryptocurrency payments. Nazarenko attempted to conceal his activities by routing payments through multiple wallets and deleting emails after the site was reported in February 2024.

The operation of OnlyFake highlights the growing threat of AI in creating sophisticated fraudulent documents, posing significant risks to national security and financial systems. U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton emphasized that such activities undermine efforts to combat terrorism and other crimes. Nazarenko faces up to 15 years in prison and has agreed to forfeit $1.2 million.
