On Thursday, Maine resident Brian Mason filed a $5 million class-action lawsuit against Anthem, alleging that the managed health care company failed to take measures – including encrypting information – to protect customer data, according to a Friday Portland Press Herald report.
The complaint states, “Unfortunately, Anthem, Inc.'s failure to encrypt … means that these customers' data is now freely readable by the hackers who acquired it and by whomever these hackers choose to sell the (information) to,” according to the report.
Citing the lawsuit, the report indicates that Mason is seeking $5 million in damages restitution, injunctive relief, and any other appropriate relief. Additionally, the suit states that Anthem did not listen to warnings from the FBI in 2014, which notified of attacks on health insurance companies.
