London Hydro customer data potentially compromised in security incident

Security breach, system hacked alert with red broken padlock icon showing unsecure data under cyberattack, vulnerable access, compromised password, virus infection, internet network with binary code

London Hydro, a Canadian power utility serving over 160,000 customers, is investigating a data security incident that may have exposed a portion of its customers' personal information. The company has begun notifying affected individuals, with further coverage provided by The Register.

The utility disclosed that names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, account and billing numbers, service addresses, pricing plans, contract start dates, and meter information may have been accessed. However, London Hydro stated that sensitive financial data, including banking information, payment card details, dates of birth, and government-issued identification numbers, were not involved. The full extent of the breach, including the attack method, whether data was exfiltrated, the number of affected customers, and any impact on operational or grid systems, remains unclear.

The compromised information could be used to create more convincing phishing attempts or fake billing demands, prompting London Hydro to warn customers about suspicious communications and unfamiliar account activity.
