A letter has gone out to customers of Jerry's Artarama advising that its online portal "may have been attacked" by a hacker and customer information "may have been compromised."
The Raleigh, N.C.-based art supply retailer sent out the "precautionary" message to advise customers of "a potential data security incident that may involve your information."
While the letter from Michael Marchetta, the company's director of marketing operations, said precautions had been taken to prevent cyberattacks, an intruder "appears" to have penetrated the site's defenses and may have placed malicious code on the system. Based on the company's initial investigation, it appeared as if customers transacting sales on the site between May 3 until July 10 may have had their personal information stolen. Customers making purchases in Jerry's retail stores were not affected.
The retailer has notified law enforcement and enlisted a technology firm to implement additional measures and monitoring software enhancements to its security.
