Based on information from Tech Radar, the Russian state statistics agency, Rosstat, recently experienced a significant cybersecurity breach that resulted in the exposure of sensitive military information.
Hackers from the groups Belarusian CyberPartisans and Silent Crow claimed responsibility for the attack, which occurred between Oct. 29 and Nov. 1, 2026. The perpetrators stated they exfiltrated 23TB of data, including internal document management systems and casualty figures related to the war in Ukraine. The hackers alleged that Russian military losses reached 1,584,910 personnel, alongside the loss of 587,409 unmanned aerial vehicles. While Rosstat acknowledged suspicious activity during the Halloween weekend, the agency maintained that its infrastructure remained functional and denied that any protected information was leaked. The attackers, however, asserted they gained deep access to the agency's central and regional IT infrastructure, including domain controllers and virtualization systems. Cybersecurity experts and law enforcement agencies are currently investigating the incident to determine the attack vector and the extent of the compromise. Official Russian sources have not verified the casualty figures released by the hackers, and the incident highlights ongoing vulnerabilities within federal departments regarding the security of sensitive national data sets.
