Google Gemini integrates personal data for enhanced AI responses

Google has begun offering Gemini users the ability to connect their Gmail, photos, search history, and YouTube data for more personalized AI responses. This new feature, dubbed Personal Intelligence, is currently in beta in the US and will roll out to AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers over the next week, with further coverage provided by The Register.

Josh Woodward, VP of Google Labs, Gemini and AI Studio, announced the beta availability of Personal Intelligence, which allows the Gemini model to access information from various Google apps. This integration aims to enable Gemini to answer queries using personal or app-specific data, enhancing its ability to retrieve specific details and reason across complex sources. For instance, a user could ask Gemini to find their car's license plate number, which the AI could retrieve by scanning their photo library. Google emphasizes that this feature is opt-in and off by default, with user data stored securely within Google's ecosystem. The company states that while prompts and responses may be used for model improvement, personal data like photos or emails are not directly used for training.

The introduction of Personal Intelligence raises questions about data privacy and user autonomy, echoing past controversies surrounding Google's data-sharing policies. Google asserts that user data remains secure and under control, and that guardrails are in place to prevent the misuse of sensitive information. The company also warns that Gemini responses may be inaccurate and should not be relied upon for professional advice.
