A coalition of about 50 former national security leaders is pressing Congress to expedite a straightforward renewal of a critical surveillance authority just days before its expiration, warning that even a temporary lapse would jeopardize counterterrorism and espionage efforts, reports The Record, a news site by cybersecurity firm Recorded Future. In a letter directed at lawmakers, signatories including former DNI James Clapper and ex-FBI Director Christopher Wray urged passage of a "clean" eighteen-month extension of FISA Section 702 without burdening the measure with extraneous legislative amendments. The authority, which underpins the NSA's ability to intercept foreign communications routed through domestic infrastructure, is set to sunset on April 20, leaving a razor-thin window for a fractured House GOP to act. While President Trump advocates for a renewal devoid of modifications, the process is threatened by demands from privacy advocates and libertarians for further civil liberties curbs, as well as a push from some Trump loyalists to attach a contentious voting rights bill. The former officials cautioned against allowing "unrelated policy debates" to derail the reauthorization, arguing that such entanglement places a vital intelligence apparatus at unnecessary risk just as the statutory clock runs out.
