White House meets GOP on FISA renewal

Senior Trump administration officials are set to meet with key House Republicans to chart a path forward on renewing FISA Section 702 before it expires in April, reports The Record, a news site by cybersecurity firm Recorded Future.

The White House session will include Chief of Staff Susan Wiles, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, CIA Director John Ratcliffe and other top officials, alongside House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan and Intelligence Chair Rick Crawford. Section 702 permits surveillance of foreign threats but has long drawn bipartisan criticism because Americans' communications can be incidentally collected and queried without a warrant. While intelligence leaders deem the authority vital, some lawmakers are pressing for reforms.

The administration is reportedly seeking a clean extension of 18 months or three years. Jordan, however, previously backed legislation requiring court approval before searching the 702 database, a proposal that narrowly failed in 2024. His committee is now drafting a bipartisan renewal bill. Senate Republicans are awaiting White House direction, underscoring how presidential backing could determine whether Congress advances a straightforward reauthorization or attaches new safeguards.
