Europol targets ‘The Com’ extremist network, removing thousands of harmful URLs

As detailed in Bleeping Computer, Europol announced a significant operation targeting "The Com," a decentralized network of violent extremist groups responsible for disseminating harmful online content. The multi-week initiative, involving nine European countries, focused on removing URLs associated with the group's online activities.

The operation, dubbed "Referral Action Days," took place between June and July 2026 and aimed to disrupt "The Com's" online ecosystem. Investigators removed 4,340 URLs containing content that encouraged self-harm, sexual exploitation of minors, violent acts, and the creation of extremist manuals. The Com utilizes coded language and emojis to obscure its messages, often recruiting and grooming young individuals through social media and gaming platforms. This action builds on previous efforts, including Project Compass, which led to 30 arrests and the identification of 179 suspects. "The Com" has also been linked to high-profile ransomware attacks against major retailers and casinos, highlighting the diverse and dangerous nature of its operations.
