Poll: Europeans distrust US and Chinese data handling, favoring homegrown tech

As reported by Tech Radar, a significant majority of Europeans express deep distrust in how US and Chinese tech companies handle their personal data, leading to a growing demand for domestic alternatives.

A recent Politico European Pulsepoll revealed that 84% of surveyed Europeans do not trust American tech firms with their data, while 93% feel the same about Chinese companies. This distrust stems from long-standing concerns about foreign governments accessing user data. In contrast, 51% of respondents trust European tech companies, and 45% trust their national governments. Germans showed the highest distrust of foreign firms, with 98% distrusting Chinese companies.

The European Union's robust General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) imposes strict rules on data handling, with significant fines and potential operational bans for violations, even for companies outside the EU. While EU regulations like GDPR aim to protect citizens, they have also faced criticism for potentially hindering competitiveness and AI innovation.
