California data deletion tool imminent

Internet pivacy

StateScoop reports that the California Privacy Protection Agency will introduce on Jan. 1 the new Delete Request and Opt-out Platform, or DROP tool, which would allow residents to request the erasure of their personal information from over 500 state-registered data brokers.

Californians looking to use DROP will be required to verify their residency and provide basic personal details of their choosing, according to the CPPA, which emphasized that submitted requests will be promptly confirmed by the tool, while reassuring that information in deleted requests will not be sold or shared. Data brokers, which are compelled to delete multiple data types, including personal information, financial details, behavioral data, and health information, should report their response to requests within 90 days.

However, other data, including property records and government filings, as well as other financial and health details controlled by federal and state laws, are not mandated to be deleted under California's Delete Act.
