Akamai, Macrometa enter into partnership for edge-cloud platform

VentureBeat reports that Akamai Technologies has entered into a strategic equity investment deal with Macrometa Corporation over plans to develop an edge-cloud platform built for enterprise. Akamai, creator of the Akamai platform and the concept of the content delivery network, which is the progenitor of edge computing technology, now plans to provide a CDN equivalent for the cloud -- a secure and performant edge-computing infrastructure combined with Macrometa's global data network to allow apps, web services and APIs to be delivered in real-time, according to the company. By moving cloud-hosted web services and cloud-native data and apps to the edge we fix the slow part of the cloud problem. And by making these cloud data and apps run in dozens -- if not hundreds -- of regions around the world simultaneously, Macrometa fixes the breaks easily part of the cloud problem, added Macrometa founder and CEO Chetan Venkatesh. The partnership has enabled an integration of the Akamai EdgeWorkers technology into the Macrometa GDN console, API and SDK, allowing developers to create a cloud app or API in Macrometa and then deploy it globally through Akamais edge locations.
