Advanced cyber-enabled cargo heists on the rise

More sophisticated cyber intrusion-driven cargo theft was noted by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association to be increasingly overshadowing traditional cargo heists in the logistics and transportation sector, according to SecurityWeek.

Both cybercriminal techniques and standard deception methods have been harnessed by crime syndicates to compromise shippers, carriers, and brokers in attacks that facilitated subsequent ransomware deployment, data exfiltration, and extortion, noted the NMFTA's 2026 Transportation Industry Cybersecurity Trends Report.

"Across the sector, the correlation between digital compromise and physical theft is now unmistakable. Cyber intrusion often precedes or directly enables theft of freight," said the report, which also noted attackers' increased utilization of AI, business email compromise, and dispatch system hacking in intrusions. However, increased cybersecurity awareness training has been aiding the transportation sector.

"Fleets and logistics companies that invested in ongoing social engineering awareness training and phishing simulations saw measurable reductions in successful social engineering incidents," the NMFTA said.
