As reported by Biometric Update, a significant cyberattack on the digital government infrastructure of Moldova has resulted in the exposure of personal data linked to approximately 750,000 national identification numbers.

The breach occurred between Oct. 19 and Oct. 23, involving the unauthorized querying of roughly one million state identification numbers. Attackers exploited vulnerabilities in government services that did not require authentication to extract sensitive records, including names, birth details, health insurance status, bank account numbers and tax information. The head of the Cybersecurity Agency, Mihai Lupascu, described the incident as a highly sophisticated operation affecting about one-third of the country's resident population. In response, Prime Minister Vasile Tofan confirmed that authorities are investigating potential involvement by foreign state actors. While no perpetrator has been identified, the government has temporarily disconnected vulnerable systems to contain the threat and is currently working to restore services following security audits. President Maia Sandu has scheduled an emergency meeting to address the crisis and determine future security measures. This incident highlights growing global concerns regarding the security of national identity databases, following similar data breaches reported in Denmark and Senegal. Moldova remains committed to strengthening its digital sovereignty through increased investment in cybersecurity architecture.
