Threat of the month: Passwords

The argument around the use of passwords and their relevancy today continues to increase.

What is it?

Passwords are one of the oldest – and still one of the most important – security measures used within businesses today.

How does it work?

The two best practices are to have complex passwords and change them frequently. But, while this does help provide increased levels of security, it also puts a burden on employees, specifically IT personnel, to remember and manage such complex passwords.

Should I be worried?

Managing passwords is certainly something to worry about, particularly if you are trying to do so only using the basic tools provided within your common Windows and Linux operating systems.

How can I prevent it?

Rotate passwords frequently and delegate people access to servers without them needing to know the password to begin with. This can help remove the complexity of proper password management in an organization and lead to success with one of the oldest security best practices.
