Stolen Daytona Beach hospital laptop contained patient info

A laptop belonging to Halifax Health medical center in Daytona Beach, Fla. was recently stolen, putting patient information that was contained on the laptop at risk.

How many victims? 33,000.

What type of personal information? Unspecified patient information.

What happened? The theft occurred on Aug. 28 from a Halifax Health employee's vehicle. Information contained on the laptop was password protected.

Details: A Halifax Hospital spokesperson told the Daytona Breach News-Journal Online that the laptop may have contained information about surgery patients and others who have received service at the hospital.

What was the response? Individuals whose information was believed to have been on the laptop have been notified by letter and were urged to file a fraud alert with credit reporting agencies. The hospital has also set up a toll-free number for questions.
